Set the MOOOd with these pure, clean-burning, chemical-free candles made here on the land. In unscented and scented options, our simple candles are made from the most basic ingredient: tallow rendered from beef fat that came from our South Poll and Galloway Cattle right here on the farm, poured pure into recyclable glass jars with wax wicks. The only thing we add are a couple drops of essential oils in the scented options – no complicated ingredients or chemicals to be found.
Though not as common these days, the first known candles were made of beef and sheep tallow by the Romans in the 500s BC, at the time creating a more luxurious option than the common oil lamp for festivities and special occasions. Tallow candles have been used since by many people in many places to cast warm light in their homes and guide their way in the night – including here in Appalachia, as one thrifty way to get the most out of what’s on hand to meet one’s own needs.
We make tallow candles on the farm because it helps us make use of a resource – beef fat – that might otherwise go to waste. Left over from the butchering process that brings you all our tasty cuts of beef, there can be a lot of it left over that can be difficult to get use from. Rather than generating waste, we’re turning to whole-animal traditions that used every part for more than just food. Rather than letting the fat go to waste, we’re trying to make it into something beautiful, useful, and healthy – to light people’s lives up in some small way. This is just one way we try to make use of all parts of the animals we raise here at the farm to honor their sacrifice, reduce waste – and to produce a lovely, chemical-free candle that will burn clean and warm for many hours.
Perfect for people with chemical or scent sensitivities, those who just like the warm light of a candle without scent, or those who want to make their own scent by adding a few drops of their favorite essential oil to the surface of the candle before lighting.
